The ultimate goal of this project is to support and strengthen Atikamekw governance. The project focuses specifically on State and Atikamekw models to deal with problems and conflicts related to conjugal and family violence and the protection of children whose development is compromised. It aims to strengthen, develop and support Atikamekw methods of conflict resolution and to ensure their recognition within the Atikamekw nation and by the Quebec government (particularly in the context of negotiations with the latter). Therefore, the project concerns two levels: political and social.
The project team plans to:
Describe and compare practices, experiences and the impact or consequences of the different conflict resolution systems of the State and Atikamekw in matters involving conjugal and family violence and the protection of children whose development is compromised. We will seek to document the sources and legal foundations, structure, philosophy and objectives, operations and practices, respective areas of jurisdiction, and possible interactions between the two systems, as well as the experiences and consequences of relying on these systems for conflict resolution.
